‘Serenity’ release date set for Dec. 20

Just in time for last-minute Christmas shopping, executives at Universal Studios have officially announced Dec. 20 as the date sci fi western Serenity will debut on DVD.

With a suggested retail price of just under $30, the DVD is priced at a similar level to other expensive films that did not recoup their initial investment with box office ticket sales.

The film cost $40 million to make and about $15 million to market. Serenity‘s final projected box office take is projected to be less than $28 million in North America.

Universal says that it expects the film to sell well in DVD format. Fans hoping for more film installments are resting their hopes that sales for the home video market will more than make up for the loss the film took from its theatrical release.
